Poly Memories - by George R. Mach
"Cal Poly's 1960 Mustang Football Team"
We remember the football team's plane crash very well. I lost one of
my advisees, Marshall J. Kulju (pronounced "cool you"), a mathematics
major and a member of the football team. I had had Marshall in four
of my classes and he was a very good student.
At the time, I was on leave of absence attending graduate school at
Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. We first heard of the
crash on the evening television news. The next day I bought the
Chicago Tribune and the Indianapolis Star newspaters. Both had large
headlines and extensive coverage of the accident. I learned of
Marshall's death in the Chicago Tribune.
Many years later I gave both of those newspapers to the Cal Poly
archives and they were very happy to have them. I still have a copy
of the letter I sent to Marshall's mother, My office mate, Charles
Elston, attended Marshall's funeral in my place.
